Athirappilly Waterfall
District: Thrissur | Height: 80 feet | Nearest Town: Chalakudy (20 km) | Best Time to Visit: October to January | Entry Fee: Rs 30 adults, Rs 15 children.
Here is a fact that hits differently when you are standing in front of it. Athirappilly is 330 feet wide. Not tall, wide. It does not fall in a single neat column like most waterfalls. It spreads, it sprawls, and it fills your entire field of vision as if nature decided to go full widescreen.
This is the most famous waterfall in Kerala and the title is well deserved. At 80 feet tall and 330 feet across, Athirappilly is the largest waterfall in the state and one of the most visited in all of India. You have probably already seen it in a film without knowing it. Bahubali was shot here. Dil Se was shot here. The place is essentially a natural film set that occasionally lets tourists in.
The waterfall sits inside the Vazhachal Forest Division, a protected forest home to great Indian hornbills, elephants, lion-tailed macaques and over 270 bird species. This is not just a waterfall visit. It is a wildlife experience that happens to have a spectacular waterfall at its centre and if you arrive in the early morning you will hear the hornbills before you even hear the falls. The path down to the viewing platform is steep in sections but completely manageable. The mist starts hitting you about 200 metres before the viewing area and by the time you get there you are already half wet and smiling about it.
How to reach: Frequent buses run from Chalakudy to Athirappilly. From Kochi it is about 55 km by road. Hire a taxi or take a bus to Chalakudy and then a local bus onward.
Entry fee: The minimum charges Rs 30 for adults and Rs 15 for children. Parking charges may be extra.
Travel Tip: Swimming is strictly prohibited at Athirappilly and for very good reason. The currents are deceptively powerful, so do not let the beauty fool you. Stick to the viewing platforms. Come on a Tuesday or Wednesday if you can because weekend crowds here are genuinely intense.
